October 2026: When the Balance of Power Shifts

As October Begins

The opening days of October have already reflected some of the astrological themes of the month. Around the world, questions of leadership and authority have moved quickly to the foreground. Austria's vice chancellor announced his departure, Serbia's former president launched a campaign to return to power as prime minister, Brazil held a consequential presidential election, and large demonstrations in India challenged election authorities. At the same time, Yemen launched a major military offensive over control of territory and state institutions.

Whether viewed astrologically or simply as world events, the common thread is striking: leadership, challenges to authority and struggles over who holds power.

October begins with an unusually concentrated pattern in the sky. Mars opposes Pluto while Mercury forms a challenging angle to both, creating what astrologers call a T-square. This is a tense pattern that can bring conflicts and underlying issues into the open. At almost the same time, Venus turns retrograde on October 3.

Together, these patterns bring questions of power, communication, relationships, money and values to the surface. Situations that have been developing quietly may become much more visible. Mars opposite Pluto can describe a contest of wills. Mercury’s involvement brings words, information and negotiations into the picture. Reactions can be strong, positions entrenched and words unusually powerful. This is a time to listen carefully and verify information before reacting.

Venus Retrograde: Looking Again

Venus retrograde from October 3 into mid-November asks us to reconsider what and whom we value.

Relationships from the past may resurface, but the symbolism is broader than romance. Money, agreements, loyalties and priorities may all require another look.

This becomes especially significant as Venus activates the powerful Mars-Pluto configuration that begins the month, forming a challenging aspect to Mars on October 10 and to Pluto on October 20. Events or tensions that first surface in early October may continue to unfold throughout the month, bringing further developments, revelations, or changes as the planetary pattern progresses.

Ketu, Regulus and the Question of Leadership

In Vedic astrology, another longer pattern has been developing around leadership and power.

Ketu, associated with separation and release, has been traveling through an area of the sky traditionally connected with ancestry, leadership, inherited authority and the throne. This area is called Magha Nakshatra, and it includes Regulus, one of the ancient Royal Stars long associated with kings and leaders.

The symbolism became especially concentrated during late summer, when Ketu crossed the region of Regulus. In August, the Sun joined Ketu near the Royal Star. By October, Ketu remains in Magha, continuing this longer story involving leadership, authority and changing relationships with power.

In world affairs, this combination raises intriguing questions about leaders, succession, legitimacy and changing positions of power. It becomes even more interesting when this same area of the zodiac is important in the birth charts of people who actually hold positions of great power.

Donald Trump’s chart is a striking example. His Ascendant and Mars are both in this same area of sidereal Leo, making Ketu’s passage through Magha particularly significant in his chart.

This does not tell us what will happen to a particular leader. Astrology describes patterns and timing rather than predetermined events. But against the background of October’s larger struggle over power and control, the symbolism is difficult to overlook.

Who holds power, who challenges it, and when does the balance of power begin to shift?

A Change of Direction

The middle of October brings some support. The Sun forms a supportive connection with Jupiter, while Mars forms one with Saturn. This can provide opportunities for measured, practical action rather than reaction. At the same time, Pluto turns direct on October 16, bringing questions of power and transformation back into focus. Then the story turns inward again.

Mercury turns retrograde October 24, joining Venus in a period of review. Conversations may need to be revisited. Information may prove incomplete. Something overlooked the first time may become important.

By October 26, the Sun challenges Pluto, returning us once again to the central question of the month: What can remain as it is, and what has reached the point where it must change? 

The Larger Message

October is not necessarily a month for immediate answers. It is a month of revelation and reconsideration.

Relationships may reveal what has been hidden beneath the surface. Old conversations can return. Questions involving money, loyalty and trust may require another look. Leaders and institutions may face questions about authority and legitimacy.

Mercury and Venus turn direct in mid-November, and some of what has been unclear may begin to make more sense.

October may reveal what can no longer continue in its present form. What follows begins the process of discovering what comes next.
